Victoria is continuing its commitment to healthier, more energy-efficient homes – and new rental standards are set to take effect soon. From 1 March 2027, rental providers must install energy-efficient fixed cooling in the main living area of the property.
This change will apply when starting a new lease or when an existing lease becomes periodic (month-to-month). This aims to improve comfort and reduce energy costs for renters – and it’s part of a broader focus on minimum standards for rentals.
✅What Counts as “Energy-Efficient Cooling”?
While the detailed guidelines are still being finalized, energy-efficient systems typically include:
- Split-system air conditioners with a high energy star rating
- Other fixed cooling systems that are efficient and suitable for the size of the living area
